In 2003, Sen John McCain was on a book tour selling, "Worth The Fighting For: A Memoir." He was to appear at a wonderful independent bookstore called, "Barbara's Bookstore" in Chicago. I wanted my 5 year old niece who lived with us to be able to meet someone who ran for President. I thought it would be a great living civic lesson. My wife, my niece and I drove 40 miles into Chicago to meet Sen. McCain.
We arrived just as McCain started to speak. About 40 people showed up which surprised me. I thought the place would be packed. One woman told me, "Well, he's old news now."
McCain spoke at length about the book. Then, he took questions for about a half an hour. A chair and a small table was then set up for McCain so he could sign books and chat with people. The line moved quickly. We were dead last in line with a five year old in tow who was getting tired and hungry.
We moved up to the table and he noticed my niece right away (as any good pol would.) He said, "Oh, she is so beautiful! What a sweetheart. What is your name, honey?" Well, my niece ate it up and hugged him. McCain seemed very warm and genuine. He talked about his family...we talked about ours. McCain didn't seem in any rush to leave.
He asked us, "Is there any question you'd like to ask me?"
I said, "Yes. What would be the first thing you'd do if you were President."
He sat and then grew very serious. He said he would immediately impose a strict military blockade against North Korea. He went on to say President Clinton was wrong about North Korea.
I asked him, "Wouldn't that mean war? What about the Chinese?"
He said not to worry about China because they are more worried about building their economy, not war. McCain went on to say if the North Koreans unleashed any nuclear weapons they had, they would be "annihilated" quickly. He said he hates war but it would be cause dying for--for future generations. McCain said if there was war, it would be better now than later.
We thanked him for his time and left. My wife turned to me and said, "I can't believe it! This guy would have been worse than Bush! He is crazy!"
Our niece then asked, "Why did he keep talking about war?"
Exactly. War. War. Bomb. Bomb. Bomb.
Reason #3214 why it is so so important McCain should not be elected President!
