With so much emotion going thru me over the last 14 hrs all I have done is wipe the tears away. I ernt to bed in tears and I woke up this morning in tears. Tears of joy for this country, Obama's family and for the World. Watching history being made right in front of your eyes is some truly heavy stuff. But now that we have exhaled we can again start breathing. As Obama has said many time, "No where in the world could this happen". Last night is why this country is so GREAT. American has again proven that here, and no where else, could you have such a dream and achieve it. Now all of our childre can really dream. The first step has been taken to get us out of the ditch. We have a driver. Now it is time for all of us to pick up a shovel and start digging.
The communication with my friends started yesterday morning at 6:am and finally concluded well after midnight. Watching all of those people in Grant Park just proves, when challenged, this country comes together. John McCain was right when he said, "We don't run from History, we make history". Last night we made it again. When the moment came and he went over 270 electoral votes, not only did the country change, the world changed. Celebrations began around the world.
One of my friends and I were discussing how big a moment this was and we compared it to Martin Luther King's speech, previous elections, and several others. But to me none of them were as meaningful and made such an impact. I compared it to a moment that came when I was younger. As I watched Morning Joe the same debate came up and for once Joe and I agreed. This moment was as big, if not bigger than this country putting a man on the moon. Two improbable moments that you really couldn't put your hands around until it happened. None of us could believe that we were actually seeing someone walk on the moon. Moments of impossibility only come once in a lifetime if you are lucky. We were extremely lucky to witness such a moment last night.
African-Americans all over the country have seen other black politicians try and run for President but not even get out of the gate. Not this time. Once he won Iowa I can hear all of my friends. "There aint' no black people in Iowa"...The dream that Dr. King had, could then be seen by the rest of us. We could actually start to believe that this country was ready for a change of this magnitude. Racial prejudice has always been a "big elephant" in the room for this country, but I believe it got a lot smaller last night. By electing Obama last night, America took its first step back to the stature that it once had. The world is a much better place this morning because we, the American people, decided to grow and re-shape ourselves once again. This also proves once again why "everyone" wants to be here, be here to share in these kinds of moments. This has become more than a moment for black Americans, it is a moment for All Americans.
When Michelle said that she was proud of her country, she was attacked by the right. But she knew then what the rest of us know now, we are all "PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN". Thank you Barack Obama.
