It has been far too long since I have been able to blog here; alot going on in life etc,etc. Let me start by offering my sincere congratulations to everybody at Daily Kos and of course the new President-elect, Senator Barack Obama and the Democratic Party as a whole. I was at an election night party and the sense of elation was something to behold....now down to the business of the diary.
David Cameron, leader of Britain's Conservative Party, welcomed the election victory of Barack Obama in the following terms;
"In electing Barack Obama, America has made history and proved to the world that it is a nation eager for change. This has been an exciting and inspirational contest with two great candidates. In these difficult times people everywhere are crying out for change. Barack Obama is the first of a new generation of leaders who will deliver it - he has my whole-hearted congratulations. This is an important moment not just for America but for the world. Barack Obama's victory will give people a new opportunity to look at the United States and see her for what I believe she is - a beacon of opportunity, freedom and democracy."
Not that the leader of Britain's main opposition party would have any vested interest in promoting the cause of change. However, this got me thinking about something that I have often mentioned in passing here before; namely how centre-left/left parties relate on an international level. All the three main political parties have links with organisations in Europe but it seems to me that there is nothing similar with parties in the United States. Now, I understand this is partially down to the fact that at leadership level statesman like distance has to be observed but what is to stop it at grassroots levels via the medium of things like Daily Kos??
The left has a proud history of internationalism and fraternity...maybe
its time to rediscover that...
