I'm a lifelong Texan, but have been a Democrat most of my adult life. Since I'm lucky enough to live in Austin, most of my local and state representatives are Democrats (and damned good ones). But I'm still stuck with really slimy Republicans representing me in the Senate and Congress.
I'm not alone. There are thousands in my situation. And many of us were really involved in this election. I say we keep that level of energy going -- and make sure that the Repubs we're stuck with hear our voices loud and clear.
How? Read on.
If you have Republican senators or congressmen, put them on speed-dial. It makes it easy to communicate your position on your daily commute. And if thousands of like-minded constituents are calling them regularly, that's some pressure applied.
Write letters to the editor when your rep makes a particularly bone-headed move. If they're being hypocritical, point it out. Believe me, you'll have plenty of opportunities.
If they hold town hall meetings, show up and be armed with thoughtful, well-researched questions designed to make them squirm. It would be even better if you could band together with other like-minded people in your community and all show up at the meeting. Question their votes and point out their habit of serving their party and not their constituents. Try to look like one of their supporters, and phrase you're question like you are a supporter who has been betrayed. Your goal is to point out to those in attendence (and any media present) that this elected official is not who he/she claims to be.
In short, hold them accountable. Publicize their inconsistencies and hypocrisies. Let them know they're being watched.
As one who has just been saddled with John Cornyn as my senator for another six years, I'd appreciate some other suggestions.
