I don't know her name. I never met her before. Most likely, I will never see her again. she is courage, and determination, and pride. Who is she? Follow me below the fold...
I am a poll worker. I work at a polling site in SoCal, adjacent to Cal State Northridge. And although we had hundreds of students voting yesterday, there was one voter yesterday who crystalized this election for me.
We had a long line when we opened the polling site, a classroom at the rear of a church. My job was to help provisional voters, and when I wasn't doing that, help move the line along where I could. A middle aged black lady voted and then came to me with a question.
Her mother wanted to vote, but was not sure she was still registered. She wondered if I could check the voter list, because her mother had not voted since 2000. This lady explained that her mother had suffered a stroke shortly after the 2000 election. She could only walk with a cane. She could not speak. I asked her where her mother was, and to my amazement, she told me her mother was waiting in line to vote.
So I went out, and we pulled this amazing lady out of the line, checked her registration, and got her into a polling booth. She voted. And I knew, at that moment, beyond any shadow of a doubt, who would win the election. Yes, we can.
