Here we see the payoff of the long months and longer days that led up to yesterday's climax. Gone are the worries - what if we didn't do enough? What if one more phonebanking shift, one more canvassing route, would have put us over the top? What if we fall short?
We did it. We left it all on the road. We did enough, and put Barack Obama into the White House.
We did our part. Each and every one of us.
You donated to the campaign. Maybe you maxed at $4600; maybe you couldn't spare more than $5. But you did your part.
You phonebanked for Obama. Maybe you've made four thousand calls in the past few months; maybe you just barely found the time for five or ten calls. You did what you could, and look what happened!
You canvassed in your neighborhoods, or went across the country to help out in vital areas. But you left it all on the roads and streets and sidewalks and driveways of the voters, and you got out the vote for Obama.
Maybe you organized a regional office, maybe you ran errands. Maybe you were a paid campaign staffer, maybe you volunteered.
Maybe you made food for the volunteers. Maybe you watched the kids so your spouse could go help out. Maybe you put out a lawn sign, or talked to your friends and neighbors about Obama.
Maybe all you could do was vote. Maybe you were too young to vote, but you didn't let that keep you out of the political process.
And you did it. We did it. We put our hearts and souls and bodies and minds and time and money into this campaign, and it was just enough to make history.
We own it, now. This is our moment. Everyone, from Barack and Joe and the senior campaign staff, to the last volunteer and donor and voter, owns a piece of this accomplishment, and none of us should ever forget it.
We made Barack Obama the next President of the United States.
Yes we did.
