This morning I began to think of some of the great progressives who would have been rejoicing had they lived to see Barack Obama elected president.
Molly Ivins was an absolute joy and comic relief during some of the darkest days of the Bush presidency.
Molly was a great friend of Texas Governor Ann Richards who was also famous for her down-home wit. Ann Richards brought the military oil subsidies mentioned in my prior post to public attention in the early 90's.
Sadly, they both died of cancer within six months of each other.
Molly wrote a syndicated column until days before her death. She told of attending high school in Houston with George W.
Not long after W. defeated Kerry in the 2004 election Molly wrote a great story of consolation to progressives and I remembered it today. She wrote the Republican Party would live to regret his re-election.
A farmer told her once how to stop a dog from killing chickens. He told her if you tied a dead chicken around the dogs' neck so it had to smell the rotting flesh for days on end it would never go near a chicken again. She predicted the American people would be equally sick of W. by the end of his term.
Let's hope the American voters never again go near his kind.
