I was talking to my husband this evening about how pissed I am about all the gay marriage bans that have been passed recently. I was ranting to him, as I tend to do when I am passionate about something, when he looked at me and said, "So, what are you going to do about it? Sitting there bitching about it isn't going to change anything." I was thinking about that, and decided that I should "put my money where my mouth is" and put my passion for GLBT rights into practice.
The problem is that I don't have the faintest idea where to start. This is something that is just too damn important to me to limit my support for this cause to just posting comments of support here on DKos. I want to put myself in the trenches, so to speak. My biggest obstacle, though, is finding where I can go or what I can do to really become active in this endeavor, because, at this point, I don't have the foggiest idea of how to get involved or even if anyone would want or need a middle-aged straight woman with no experience in activism.
I have come to realize that I can't handle seeing anyone having their rights curbed. It makes me angry. After watching our President-elect handle his campaign, and having listened to his speeches, I have decided that it is the time for me to be the change I want to see in this world.
Can anyone give me some suggestions? I live in Alabama, just outside of Birmingham.
Any suggestions or feedback will be appreciated.
