On Saturday, November 8th, Daniel Schorr did his weekly commentary on NPR's weekend edition. At the end of the interview he was asked if the election of Barack Obama meant that the country was moving to the left. Schorr, stated that he did not think so, that this was not cyclical change of the country moving to the left. I like Schorr, but I don't think he was razor sharp when he gave that answer. Any sentient being with an ounce of sense taking over from the Bush frat party would by definition move the country to the left given the extreme right policies of the outgoing administration.
I would not comment on this "stray remark" were it not for the MSM's continuing narrative that the country is "center right" and how the new administration need to reflect this center-right "reality." Every indication, including today's announcement that the Obama administration is preparing 200 directives to undo Bush's extremist policies on the environment, energy, reproductive rights and other social issues, signals a shift to the left. I don't know where these pundits got their poli-sci credits but any rational analysis would conclude that a vast array of right-wing policies are about to be flushed down the rat hole. In other words, a set of liberal-left policies are going to be immediately put in place. This was part and parcel of the Obama campaign and more critically, the reason so many people gave their blood, sweat and tears, never mind lots of $$$, to see a progressive agenda enacted. If it looks, feels and walks like a left wing duck then it's probably a left-wing duck.
I don't think we, the netroots -- the progressive community -- needs to run or hide what we want and what we expect will happen. The establishment punditocracy will continue this lame meme but it is not the reality. So, guys and gals in MSM medialand, get a clue! This is a sea change! The ship of state is leftward bound. Full steam ahead!
