Your a bigot?
I didn't realize the word bigot had such a loose interpretation these days. Last week a writer called Obama a bigot because he invited Warren to the Inauguration. Really?
Whats next, everyone who goes to the Inauguration is a bigot? How about those who watch it on TV. Are they bigots too?
The standard here is:
If you associate in any way with someone the gay community doesn't like, they can call you a bigot.
RIDICULOUS.
From where I sit many in the gay community, which I support, are introducing their own version of McCarthyism.
I have friends who don't support gay marriage, and they are not bigots. My parents do not support gay marriage, and they are not bigots. The President-Elect, Vice President-Elect and next Secretary of state, whom all here have supported, ARE NOT BIGOTS.
This needs to stop. Much of the resistance to gay marriage is grounded in traditional beliefs from baby boomers and older generations. It appears to me that many on the left are waging war on religion. They associate Christianity with "Evangelicals" and the religious right in particular and throw all Christians in the same boat with the hate mongers on the far right.
This war on religion needs to stop. Jesus as we all know never spewed a hateful thing his entire life and consorted with prostitutes, and I believe he would have no problem befriending a gay person, even though i doubt people were openly gay back then.
Christianity at its heart is not about the nonsense the religious right spews, but many Christians have grown up being told homosexuality is bad. It even says it in the old testament giving the religious community reason to deem it "Evil." My uncle is an evangelical minister (I'm Catholic) and I can remember a time when I was young that he told me he was at a "Healing Session" where the minister cast out the homosexual demon in a person and they were now straight (Not Kidding). This is the nonsense coming out of some parts of the evangelical community.
Back to the point, not everyone who doesn't support gay marriage is a bigot and I think the people here using this term know they are devaluing the word for when it truly needs to be applied to real bigots. I know many on the left are extremely upset about Warren. But the reason Obama asked him to give the invocation was for at its heart a good reason, to help stop the war between the two sides.
Many in the middle, including myself, are sick of the partisan war and actually want to see a more civil discussion about policy, especially those regarding hot button issues like abortion, god, and gay rights. Obama's invitation to Warren was an invitation to a man many consider the new leader of the evangelical community. Many on the right really appreciated it. And young evangelicals are much more open to gay rights than their parents.
Most people who do not support gay marriage are not bigots, they just believe what has been drilled into them from the moment they could comprehend speech, that marriage is between a man and a woman. Even California voted for prop 8 and thats as Liberal a state as there is. But the margin is getting closer. 75% of the country would now be supportive of gays in the military, thats a huge difference from 1993. In 2020 I'm sure the country will have moved sufficiently to allow gay marriage in many states. Until then, save the word bigot and its brethren for those who really do deserve it.
UPDATE:
This is my first diary. Im not a troll. I felt there needed to be a point of view shared that was a little different from most others. You have to spark a good discussion from time to time. I'm keeping an eye on the poll. You guys really do believe those all who think that marriage is between a man and a woman are bigots? They couldn't be ignorant to other points of view?
You know, the democratic party Obama is trying to grow doesn't think everyone who disagrees with them are bigots.
UPDATE #2:
I just realized I made a mistake with the Title and intro. Of course if you don't believe in gay rights your a bigot. I should have started with "If you believe marriage is between a man and a woman, are you a bigot?" Sorry for the inaccuracy, first time writer. I'll insure the title and intro are clearer in the future.
