As one of the editors of Black Kos, I feel I must register my feelings on this matter. However, I don't presume to speak for the other editors, nor do I presume to speak for all black people.
First, I want to say I support Obama and will continue to support Obama. I going to give him time to get into office, and then criticize him when he wavers. However, he is human and he will make numerous decision, some of which will be purely political. It is always important to keep that in the back of your mind even when voting for someone as charismatic as Obama.
As far as the discussion going on here at DKos, I must say both sides are right. But let me be specific as to what each side is right about as there are so many strands of faulty straw man arguments.
To those that say Barack Obama should reach out to those on the other side, that general statement is correct. But to assume that there is only two side is being willfully ignorant. While Obama is the next president is does not mean he is above reproach. Unfortunately, the Bush administration has been like a tazer to American society, valuing loyalty over competence, so much so that criticism is seen as badgering. So little of it (perception-wise) was done during the Bush years that we may overdo it with Obama. However this phrase "...just chill and let Obama...", or "...Obama is smarter than everyone else..." is used to try and quell any early dissent, and is also insulting. Warren is a bigot, and for those that pretend to not understand the hurt that the GLBT community is feeling, by saying let Obama do this is doubly hurtful. Reaching across the aisle must be responsible reaching, not a cavalier attempt at a symbolic fake bipartisan. Although, no one man has all the answers, that doesn't mean every man's answer should be consider. Warren thinks the answer to marginalizing the GLBT community is equating gay people to pedophiles, rapist, and beastiality. That is an answer we can NOT consider, just like calling black people monkeys is an answer we can not consider. When you demonize a group long enough you don't actually have to perpetrate violence. Those that agree with the marginalization will eventually take the next step of violence. And to hide behind the church is equally disturbing. To simply say you don't agree with GLBT is a difference of opinion. But to take it to the next level of equating gay relationships to acts of deviant behavour like pedophilia, which btw is a criminal act, is no longer an difference of opinion.
Now, to GLBT community who I know is hurt buy this decision to let Warren do the invocation, you gain more flies with honey. As with any emotion, or feeling of betrayal, it is important that there be a grieving period. I have read some hurtful comments towards those that support your struggle. I as a heterosexual fully support gay marriage, but as an christian, african american to hear that I'm a bigot, or insensitive is hurtful to me. The reason the Right was so successful in California was because the organizational structure was there. When I heard about what was going on in California with respect to Prop. 8, I had already budgeted myself so I couldn't give anything. But even if I could give what "central" organization was the rally point for No on Prop 8 resources. And I know the wound from Prop 8 is still present, then Warren had to happen, but that is no excuse to use broad sweeping genaralization about christians, of which I'm one. I try to in a respectful manner to challenge my church to more Christ-like and focus on poverty, health issues which affect us all. I am but one man but it makes it harder for me to win the water cooler debate when my fellow churchgoers throw back at me comments they've read from the GLBT community. It took almost 400 years for black people to get to this point. So for the GLBT commnity, I say this "It will take time"
In closing, what I want is for homophobia, and sexism, to be as taboo as racism, but until we get to that point lets not choke each other to death. Someone has to be here to say we finally made "All men are created equal" a true statement.
