Welcome to WAYWO, the weekly series playfully titled, "What Are You Working On?" and aimed toward crafters and creative people in our Daily Kos community. We welcome all sorts to come in and talk about what is currently on your project plate, be it home improvements, needlecrafts, kidcrafts, writing, blacksmithing, or anything else you can think of!
We also welcome anyone to guest host WAYWO - just post a comment or email this week's author, and we'll get you on the schedule. Join our email notification Yahoo group here, and you'll know when WAYWO is posted.
Rice Bags, or a Warm Soft Thing in 10 Minutes
Gather supplies: 2 5inches x 8 inches pieces of laundered cotton fabric, a working sewing machine, and about a cup of rice.
Put your two pieces of fabric together right sides together. You are looking at the wrong side. Sew around two long sides and one short side of the two pieces of fabric.
Stitch around the inside corners as shown.
You may wish to press the piece with your iron in order to secure the stitches. Then turn it right side out. Now it is ready to fill with rice:
I use whatever rice I have in the cupboard. Last week's rice was Trader Joe Arborio. I find the use of a funnel to be very handy.
Now this is the trickiest part: do not overfill the rice bag. You need to close the open short end with topstitching.
Fold the remaining raw edges inside and pin close if desired. Be sure to secure the beginning and ending of the stitches.
Voila'! A finished rice bag. 60 to 90 seconds in the microwave, and you have a nice warm thing to put on your sinuses or a sore muscle.
I am also knitting scarves on a schedule, and sewing a flannel raggedy blanket for my son.
So, What are YOU Working On?
