There has been a lot of anger from the Progressive movement about Proposition 8 and the other gay marriage bans that have occurred across the country in the last several years. I have to admit that I really hadn't been following the issue that closely until this year. As a straight man, I may not have followed it that closely because it didn't directly affect me. The Proposition 8 vote this year really caught my attention this year because the State of California effectively allowed the people of California to overturn the rights the Supreme Court of California gave to gay people. This is an extremely dangerous precedent, and has to be stopped. These ballot initiatives are very dangerous because you are allowing the majority to determine the fate of members of the minority. I am fairly sure if the U.S. would have allowed citizens to vote on whether segregation should have ended, there is a really good chance that the U.S. might still be segregated today. We aren't even allowed to vote directly for the President of the U.S., so why should we be allowed to vote on what rights minorities have in our society?
Just like Proposition 8 shocked me out of my complacency about the gay marriage issue, I think the Progressive movement is going to have to do something to shock people into stop voting for all these goofy ballot initiatives. The Progressive movement needs to draft ballot initiatives for the next couple of elections that will make divorce illegal in several states in the United States. I think the Progressives need to go to all the media outlets and use campaign advertising in order to make a big deal out of trying to get this initiative passed in at least one state. I think once we as straight people get a chance to see how it feels to have other people trying to determine what is best for us, we would see less support for gay marriage bans.
I know this is drastic, but I think it is the only way for this nonsense to stop. What is hurting the American family the most today is the astronomical divorce rates and out-of-wedlock births where the father is not involved in supporting or caring for their children. Gay marriage has no bearing what so ever on straight families.
I guess the question I have the Kossack community, is how do we get the ballot initiatives started?
