Like most of America, I've been watching the debate play out over what to do about the mess the Big Three automakers have gotten themselves into, so I watching the Congressional hearings on Thursday with great interest, hoping that I might find some clarity from what was said. Happily, I think I heard the words I've been longing to hear.
Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn) was the guy who pulled things together for me. Yeah, I know he's a Republican from the South, which generally means he's going to be ready to throw Blue Michigan to the economic wolves, but that doesn't change the fact that what he said was true. We need to stop thinking about The BIG THREE as though they are a single entity.
Although they are living in the same very difficult economic environment, there's no denying the fact that the current state of each of these companies is quite different from one another, which leads me to the inescapable conclusion that they should be dealt with separately. And there's nothing in the Constitution which says there has to be three automakers in Detroit.
