Earlier, a diary by Inky99 linked a report in The Hindu that John and Joe suggested missile strikes on Pakistan by India would not be out of the question. This caused much debate; my take (disclosure - I am Indian) was that India reserved the same right to self-defense that the US has (per Obama, not just Bush) IF Pakistan does not take action against the extremists.
Now, a report on Rediff.com suggests a crackdown by Pakistani security forces on Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and its current incarnation, the Jamaat-ud-Dawah, including capture of one of the alleged masterminds behind the Mumbai terror attacks, Zakiur Rehman Lakhwi. This should hopefully reduce the tension between the two countries.
Excerpts and links to Dawn/BBC reports below the fold.
Lashkar-e-Tayiba terrorist Zakiur Rehman Lakhwi, accused of masterminding the Mumbai attacks, is among over 20 members of the group arrested by Pakistani security forces during a crackdown in Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
The security forces, including the army, on Sunday launched a crackdown on the Lashkar and its front organisation, the Jamaat-ud-Dawah, in PoK and other parts of Pakistan. Helicopters were used in the operation in Muzaffarabad, the capital of PoK.
....the Dawn newspaper, quoted sources, as saying.
There was no immediate official word on the crackdown.
The Dawn newspaper report is here, with additional quotes:
Several attempts were made to obtain army’s version about the reported operation but reporters were told that a statement would soon be issued by the [Inter-Services Public Relations] ISPR.
A Jamaatud Dawa office-bearer denied that a crackdown had been launched on his organisation in other areas. The organisation has another office in Muzaffarabad where no such action was taken.
It is believed that the action taken by Pakistan against the Lashkar-e-Taiba will defuse to some extent the growing tension between the two neigbours.
Update: From the BBC:
A BBC correspondent said the camp was sealed off, but Pakistani officials did not confirm its capture.
...
It has been reported but not confirmed that one of those held was Lashkar-e-Taiba operational chief Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.
The BBC's Barbara Plett in Islamabad says India has accused him of giving orders to the Mumbai attackers.
She says if he has been arrested it is unlikely he will be handed over to India and any trial would probably take place in Pakistan.
