The McCain campaign put out a press release stating:
It is a shame that the New York Times has lowered its standards to engage in a hit and run smear campaign. John McCain has a 24-year record of serving our country with honor and integrity. He has never violated the public trust, never done favors for special interests or lobbyists, and he will not allow a smear campaign to distract from the issues at stake in this election.
(Emphasis added).
The problem, of course, is that his entire history is based upon a betrayal of the public trust - the Keating Five scandal. Now his biography is the claim that he learned of the danger of appearances of impropriety from that situation and that lead to his focus on ethics and campaign finance reform. ("The appearance of it was wrong. It's a wrong appearance when a group of senators appear in a meeting with a group of regulators, because it conveys the impression of undue and improper influence. And it was the wrong thing to do." - from the wikipedia link).
I'm just amazed they would send out a release with such an obviously untrue statement. ANY factchecking disproves this one.
