Yesterday, when I pulled the mail out of the mailbox, I had my first piece of political mail from a Dem presidential campaign. In faded sepiatones it proudly proclaimed 'Energy company employees donated over $650,000 to Barack Obama and got what they wanted. This text was accompanied by a gas station with a sign listing gasoline at 3.49 and 3.59. The fine print noted it as a mailing out of Columbus, Ohio and said the $650k number came from the 'Center for Responsive Politics'.
We'll hit the back below the fold.
On the back, a poorly cropped picture of a smiling Mr Obama was juxtaposed with a WaPo line from 7/30/05 that 'Energy bill is a "pinata of perks for energy industries." It's made to look like a headline, but I don't know if it was, or simply a line taken from a story on that date.
I'm not sure if I can continue to quote the mailer directly under fair use though I'd like to, but I'll paraphrase from here on out.
The next statement, in big bold text tied Obama's vote on that bill to BushCo and pointed out the billions in subsidies to big oil that are in every energy bill.
Then we got a side by side list of bullet points, with the energy companies again getting billions in subsidies - 6 to big oil, 9 to coal, 12 to nuclear, vs 'American Families' being 'cheated' by quick rising utility costs, record high gas prices, and continuing dependence on foreign oil.
Tiny little attribution footnote of HR 6, Vote #213 7/29/05, and notes that the subsidy numbers came from www.citizen.org.
Finish it up with a tagline to say that BHO is too pricy for 'American families', and top it off with the cherry of 'Paid for by Hillary Clinton for President'.
Soooo. Fair mailer or not folks? I will assume that Mr Obama did indeed vote to pass the energy bill. The implication is, of course, that Ms Clinton did not, although I have not verified that part yet. I'm aware that every energy bill ever passed by Congress has included billions in energy subsidies, so I guess HRC is implying she doesn't vote for any of the energy bills. Oh, and of course, I'm leaving off the first implication from the front, that BHO's vote was some sort of 'quid pro quo' from those 'energy company employees' who donated $650k to BHO.
I'd be curious to find out how much 'energy company employees' have donated to HRC.
