My wife is American. She doesn't follow politics, and doesn't even watch the news. But she's a life-long Democrat, because she's vehemently pro-choice, inherently tolerant, and knows she's not like her parents.
So I've been giving her basic updates on the primaries, talking mostly about Obama and Clinton. She doesn't like Clinton: "What's the point of having a woman president who acts like a man?"
Yesterday, I asked her to watch a short political video clip. She radiated waves of skepticism. You don't have to watch all of it if you don't like it, I told her.
Four and a half minutes later we turned to each other, with tears in our eyes, and embraced. "I love you." "I love you too."
This was the first time she had even seen what Obama looks like. She said he reminded her of Martin Luther King. She said "It made me think about us. About the things we do together."
In my lifetime, I've never seen a politician who could project such optimism. A politician who could credibly appeal to the better angels of our nature. A politician who could remind me how much I love my wife.
I don't get to vote in US elections. So this week, and in November, my wife will be voting for both of us.
