This is going to be a pretty short diary, but I've got some good information from inside the Clinton campaign that may shed some light on how they have acted and viewed this race. Brief, but intriguing.
I spoke to someone today, a colleague, who very recently spoke to Hillary Clinton insider (and "Hillaryland" member) Huma Abedin, who is essentially Hillary's right hand. My colleague is of Saudi descent, and Ms. Abedin grew up there as well. In the course of this personal discussion, Ms. Abedin made it abundantly clear that no one in the media realized how close Hillary came to dropping out of the race not long after Super Tuesday, and even after the loan was taken out. I'm not sure what kept her in; this wasn't addressed. Maybe the improving finances, maybe Mark Penn's bat-shit crazy advice or maybe a willingness to see it through.
To me, it does suggest that Hillary Clinton is aware of the limits of this contest, and her own "limits" as a candidate. She is remaining in the race probably because it is so close, and a fatal misstep by Barack Obama would but her in the nomination. Not that I am dismissing her recent comments, but many of these may be traced to a desire to be seen as tenacious to the very end so she doesn't cede inevitability to him. Once all the primaries and caucuses are complete, I speculate that this all may come to a conclusion quite rapidly.
