Howard Metzenbaum died in Florida (h/t Davybaby) last night. Metzenbaum, senator from Ohio, a true liberal and hero of working people and consumers everywhere, was the kind of senator who put his love of country and its citizens above any personal agenda.
It was diaried last night by Davybaby but didn't get much attention. Senator Metzenbaum deserves our profound gratitude and respect.
A successful businessman, his career included a healthy disdain for the excesses of big business and a willingness to go to the mattresses against bills he felt would damage the middle class and poor. He also was a consistent critic of the Reagan administration and managed to deflate some of its more lunatic proposals.
He was the kind of senator we desperately need today, and I hope that we can find a few Howard Metzenbaums in coming years. My condolences to his family; he was a man of whom the Democratic Party can be proud.
