Dateline - To Catch a Predator
In the computer world there are really two worlds the real world and the virtual world.
Computer people know the difference.
Going to work is the real world. Shooting people in war games is the virtual world.
I am afraid the Luddites on the NBC series To Catch a Predator are getting the two worlds intermixed.
With two million people in prison and counting we shouldn't start arresting people for crimes they have yet to commit.
When one liar lies to another liar on the internet it may be ugly, it may be awful and it may be disgusting. But no one should go to prison for 5 years over it..
The sheer celebrity of the show, the seriousness of the alleged crime and the process of the sting may be forcing people into seeing a crime before it really happens. Even judges are being swept up in this over righteous campaign. Should people who commit crime in the virtual world get the same punishment as those who commit crime in the real world?
The whole problem could be better handled by Google or You tube and responsible parents instead of a overstressed ham handed legal system
Back in March I wrote a diary entry critical of the sting program by NBC "TO CATCH A PREDATOR". Sting programs are very hard to design and even harder to perform correctly,
especially with lights and cameras.
Last week ABC 20/20 Brian Ross (see site) did a program also critical of "TO CATCH A PREDATOR". One of the victims had committed suicide and the Texas district attorney threw ALL the cases out for that weekend..
My question now is about all the victims that Predator caught before that big weekend. Should NBC give them a big
"sorry about that" or maybe a big check for damages.
JUDGE OKs 105 million dollar lawsuit against NBC to proceed.
At long last justice.. I can't believe it. Do you remember justice?
The basic premise of this whole series is false.
You have to commit a crime to be guilty of that crime. Two thirds of the people arrested are in need of treatment. This whole series is a indictment of our health care system and our legal system. NBC
made a ton of money off of this series. I can only hope they lose it.
NBC should remember the goal is to be better than FOX not more sleazy than FOX. The name of the company working with NBC is Perverted Justice.
