Barring a terrorist attack, the economy is going to be the number one issue for most voters come this November. So I started thinking about which elected official could BEST help Barack seize this issue as his own.
With the economy on the verge of collapse (and definitely on the election front-burner), I took a look at the US Senate website to see which Democrats, with a high-profile and some foreign affairs experience, would be good selections for Barack's running mate.
Specifically, in lieu of the bleek economic news, I looked at the Dems on the Finance Committee. And one name jumped out to me in a major way.
Chuck Schumer.
Now I know you wonks are thinking, "no way, he is a firm Clinton supporter."
But what better way to heal the party after this lengthy primary season than picking the SENIOR Senator from New York as his running mate?
But would America really elect a black and a jew?
It's complicated, but I think this is a ticket that could not lose:
- Chuck is a fighter and would be a great attack dog for Barack.
- Chuck has TONS of economic policy under his belt, which would be nice to contrast with McCain when the economy goes kaput.
- Chuck's selection not only puts to bed the rumors that Barack is a Muslim, but it repairs a sizeable amount of damage to Obama's campaign due to the Reverend Wright.
- Chuck is fast and quick-witted. He will be a great asset when dealing with the press.
- Chuck puts Florida in play for the Dems.
- Chuck allows Barack to appease those Clinton supporters who will inevitably be angered that he CAN NOT select Hillary as his running mate (negates his whole campaign theme to choose her).
And those are just the reasons that come to me as I write this. Would love to hear some feedback from others, but right now, this ticket, this Obama-Schumer ticket seems unstoppable...!
