Our guy has come off the ropes. According to the latest polls that take into account The Speech, Obama is now back above Clinton in the Dem race 46%-43%. He is still behind McCain in the daily tracking polls 42-49%, but with 9% undecided (rounded-up), the news is not as bad as it seems. A lot of people are still processing this whole thing, and McCain, despite Obama's rising negatives and the tons of bad press and McCain's free pass, isn't even at 50%. There is LOTS of room to move.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows John McCain’s lead growing against both potential Democratic opponents. McCain currently leads Barack Obama 49% to 42% and Hillary Clinton 51% to 41% margin (see recent daily results). African-American support for Clinton has collapsed, falling to 55% in the general election match-up. Obama, on the other hand, earns solid support from African-American voters but attracts only 36% of white voters in a match-up with McCain.
No way to sugarcoat the last figure. But I think the trend will reverse once the effect of the speech sinks in. On the other hand, McCain will continue to float until we have a nominee who can focus attacks on him. Until the stake is driven through the Hillary campaign's heart and the remaining pile of dust scatters to the four winds, I'm afraid her campaign will creep along, biting at Obama's heels.
