“The time when he could have been most effective has long since passed. I don’t think it’s a significant endorsement at this time.”
- Mark Penn
What does this statement say about the mindset of those in the Clinton campaign? Are we to conclude that Bill Richardon’s value is derived solely from his ethnicity? Are latinos the only members of the electorate to whom Bill Richardson speaks? Obviously we’re talking about Mark Penn here. I suppose you could make the argument that what was said was more a result of political calculus than an indicator of some worldview. But, the way that race has been strategically employed by the Clinton campaign doesn’t instill the greatest of confidence or empathy in this regard.
Does anyone really believe Penn’s quote? I mean, does Mark Penn even believe the words that are coming out of his mouth? I’m betting that he doesn’t. I bet he knows that the reporters aren’t buying what he’s selling either. Penn’s words were most likely meant for Bill Richardson himself. Like a six year old who doesn’t get his or her way retaliates, Penn is lashing out at Richardson, insulting his political, and personal value.
That’s my take, I’d be interested to here what everyone else has to say.
