I happened to be in the library and they were selling the discount books.
And then I saw the book "Four Trials," by John Edwards (2003).
It's a very compelling book.
It tells about four trials that he was involved in, and along the way he discusses his life and how the trials shaped him.
All the trials involve plaintiffs who were destroyed by corporations or hospitals.
For example, in one trial, a girl is mangled by a poorly designed drain in a pool. Her life is destroyed. Then we learn that the manufacturer of the drain has covered up such injuries, and neglected to provide proper instructions on how the drain should be installed.
It's really quite a good book. I think it would inspire readers to go into law, or at least hug their local trial lawyer. It shows how these lawsuits can force companies into changing their behavior.
The book has a pretty sad ending, when his son Wade is killed in a car accident. Edwards threads this into the trial, and writes that he sort of transferred his feelings about Wade into the case that he was trying.
The themes of this book were the themes of his campaign- how he would fight for the little guy. Also it shows his analytical mind and how he works through complex cases.
I recommend that you read this book. And hopefully soon JRE will be back in the political arena.
