First, let me say that, I know the pattern here. I post something, it gets about 10 recs (on average) and about 20 comments and then suffers a slow agonizing march to oblivion.
This is too important a diary fade away, though. So I'm hoping that you will read it, consider it, and recommend it. I don't give a hoot, so much, about getting my name on the rec list. The reason I want my stuff to be up there is because I think I have valuable insights and ideas to contribute. Some times they are hairbrained. Sometimes they are brilliant. But, this is not about personal aggrandizement or glory.
With that preamble out of the way, I am proposing a Treaty of Peace between Obama and Clinton supporters. More below the jump...
After last night it is obvious that this primary campaign is going to go on for at least another 6 weeks. As I said in a comment yesterday, the groundhog has come out of his burrow, and saw his shadow. We are going to get six more weeks of campaign winter.
So, as I see it, we have two choices. We can tear each other apart, make the Republicans gleeful, cause popcorn sales at Walmart and Tractor Supply Co go through the roof, and help elect John McCain -- or we can call a goddamn truce for the good of not only the Democratic party -- but for the Country and the world.
Because, in the heat of battle, I think we sometimes forget what is at stake in this election. The next Presient will probably choose between 2 to 3 Supreme Court Justices. Thus shaping Constitutional jurisprudence for at least a generation. This applies also to federal judges in general.
We are still fighting a disasterous war in Iraq, that must be brought to a responsible end sooner rather than later. We have millions of Americans without health care. This country is hemmoraging Manufacturiung Jobs. And we are now either in the midst of, or on the verge of a recession -- and millions of people are at risk of losing their homes.
In other words, we got real problems that need to be adressed. And unless someone can explain to me how tearing each other apart is helping to resolve those problems, we all need to take a step back, and look at this thing reasonably.
With that, I want you all to read this, and "sign" it in the comment section if you agree. Hopefully we can start something with this, and not let the GOP have any false hopes.
And let me state ahead of time that I have been as forceful a critic of Hillary Clinton and supporter of Barack Obama as anyone here. But, I am ready to move on and accept that tihs campaign will continue. So, rather that destroy the party -- we should unite it. The only way the Republicans win and this party is split in two is if we let it happen.
PEACE TREATY
The parties hereby stipulate and agree that because:
- Either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton are far superior candidates, and would make far better Presidents of the United States than John Sydney McCain
- We want a Supreme Court that respects the rule of law, is not ideologically driven, maintains the checks and balances our founders established between the coequal branches of government, and respects individual and human rights.
- We want to end the quagmire in Iraq, and bring our troops home as soon, and in as responsible a manner as is possible.
- We want universal health care for all Americans
- We want a President who will make sound economic and fiscal decisions that are not tied to protecting narrow financial interests, political considerations, or an outdated, flawed, and discredited political ideology
- We want to restore a sense of community and shared respect in this country that has been torn asunder by the cynical use of wedge issues to gain political power.
- We want to restore the respect and honor the United States enjoyed in this world and earned through the sacrifice of its young men and women over the past 100 years, and once again make this Country a force for protecting the rule of law, peace, international cooperation and human rights and dignity around the globe.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED;
That we the undersigned will hereby support the duly nominated candidate of the Democratic party to be the President of the United States.
That we will do everything reasonably in our power to help that nominee prevail in the fall election against John Sydney McCain
That we will refrain from below-the-belt, untruthful, or underhanded attacks or tactics against any candidate for our party's Presidential nomination because that will legitimize the same attacks brought by the Republican party against our nominee in the eyes of the media and the public.
That as supporters of said candidates, that we will not countenance or support such attacks as described herein previously made by our candidate or our candidate's suporters or campaign against the other candidate.
That from this day forward, we will strive to hold John Sydney McCain accountable for his record, and the record of the Republican party, and will not allow him to get a free ride while the Demicratic party's race for President is still unresolved.
That we will be as civil as possible, from this day forward, toward supoprters of a rival candidate, and recognize that no matter how tough and heated the campaign has been thus far, we all have to mend fences and move on to the general election as one -- so that we can prevail.
Signed,
Hesiod Theogeny
