I was thinking of the different ways Obama could change the momentum, change the storyline. We obviously have the 50 delegate rumor out there, but last night's losses may have pushed that back. So what can Obama do to get some of the mojo back.
In light of Hillary's comments about a joint ticket, I was thinking whether or not Obama should pick a VP now. It would certainly be unexpected, but it could have some interesting dynamics. I'll do some pro/cons after the break, and leave it up to you folks to talk about it.
PROS
- It changes the story. Hillary no longer has the headlines, and her wins are off the front page.
- Obama looks forward thinking and ready for the general. He can make the case that he and his running mate are ready for the main event.
- It steals some of Hillary's talking points. A lot of us think he should choose a VP who has experience and gravitas and a foreign policy background against McCain, but why not do it against Clinton? Wouldn't it work very much the same against her?
CONS
- Who would sign up for this? I'm not sure if he can get a good candidate who would be willing to do this before the convention, or before she drops outs.
- He might look like a jackass, jumping the gun. I don't think there's anything wrong with doing this, and I wouldn't think Hillary was being mischievous if she did it, but maybe it would play that way.
- It would dash any hope of Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama
Those are just a few of my thoughts - am I insane for thinking this is a decent idea? I know this diary is a little short, but I think a discussion on this is more interesting that just me saying stuff.
