This is going to be a very short diary, but the hilarious quotient was far too high for me to pass up.
From the NYT Caucus Blog:
Sir Elton John’s recent performance at a fund-raising event for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has drawn a formal complaint from Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group.
Mr. John, a foreign national, cannot under federal law make any contribution to a federal, state or local election campaign. The group, in a letter from its president, Tom Fitton, described Mr. John’s appearance at the fund-raiser as an “in-kind contribution from a foreign national.”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Elton John played a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton on 4/9/08. Again the NYT:
Sir Elton John was the main attraction on Wednesday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York, but the spotlight was really on Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was lavished with donations to her presidential campaign.
The event brought in more than $2.5 million, according to the campaign, from the sale of more than 5,000 tickets.
That is an awful lot of "Crocodile Rock." The only problem is Sir Elton's contribution was illegal.
From the FEC website:
Foreign nationals may not make contributions in connection with any election--Federal, State or local. This prohibition does not apply to foreign citizens who are lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States (those who have "green cards").
/snip
Most people think of contributions as donations of money in the form of checks or currency. While these are common ways of making a contribution, anything of value given to influence a Federal election is considered a contribution.
I'd say Sir Elton banging out "The Bitch is Back" (wait, he might not have played that one) counts as "anything of value," especially considering the bloated prices tickets to his concerts go for.
I doubt this complaint will go anywhere, but that doesn't stop the story from being both hysterical and another example of the ineptitude that is Hillary Clinton for President.
