I began this election cycle as an Edwards supporter but have become a strong Obama convert resulting from the inspiration I have felt watching him conduct himself through the ups and downs of the last few months. Be that as it may however, I have found myself thinking quite a bit recently about how much the Democratic Party seems to be imploding from the very distinct divisions between Obama and Clinton supporters. I work with a group of people who are primarily right-wingers and they can barely conceal their glee at the in-fighting currently being exhibited by Democrats.
It has occurred to me that perhaps the best thing for both candidates to do right now is act as though they are each the Democratic nominee and go after their real opponent: John McCain. Forget each other (to some degree) and begin running their campaigns as they intend to against the Republican nominee. I believe ultimately the superior candidate will emerge and his/her campaign for the White House will be all the stronger for this strategy.
I know some would say that Clinton will never back down...that she doesn't truly have the best interest of the party--or the nation--at heart, but I simply do not believe it. If Senator Clinton actually becomes the Democratic nominee, I will vote for her. This country cannot survive another four years (at least) of the Bush administration policies, which is exactly what we'll get with McCain as president.
Senator Obama and Senator Clinton: Start campaigning against your real opponent: John McCain. Let the voters see what you can do against the true threat to this country: Another four years of the disaster known as the Bush presidency. Instead of continuing to weaken each other's potential candidacy, start weakening John McCain instead.
It is imperative that we win the White House and we're not going to do it if we continue all the in-fighting.
