By any measurement this Democratic Nomination race has been a neck and neck contest. Every state has seen substantial support for each candidate and despite the desire to have Hillary drop out, we continue to see that she has firm support in many states and motivated supporters uninterested in her withdrawing before June 1, maybe not until the Convention.
Given the Rovian tone of the Clinton campaign: How UnCool is that?
I am used to the idea that the Republicans will swift-boat and lie and swindle the voters to tear down the Democrats. I can even understand why Hillary would resort to such tactics given that she has defined herself her entire political career by what the Republicans say or may say about her. She exists only in reaction to them. Not out of conviction to principles.
But why in Hell are nearly 50% of my party buying this shit and apparently eager to support someone who would burn down the house rather than share it? Hillary's latest arguments about electability are supported by the repeated findings that oldsters, white guys, and working class voters are unmotivated to support Obama. We complain that Hillary is invoking Republican talking points, but damn it, those talking points help her secure 45% of the vote state after state after state.
Add this 45% to the Independents and Republicans and we are facing a race where if Hillary dropped out on Wednesday, Obama would still need to persuade MANY white people to drop their prejudices and consider voting for him over the fear-mongering and war-mongering John McCain.
If lightning strikes and Hillary somehow persuades the Supers on her electability point I am left wondering whether this election has proven, at least to me, that my future no longer lies with the Democratic party. I love me some Progressive politics, and fear the track record of third parties is not encouraging, but I wonder where I would go. Because under that scenario, the Democrats would be to UnCool to associate with any longer.
That said. Obama wins this and Hillary is out by May 15. But I think our work is very much cut out for us to get registered Dems to actually vote for the Dem nominee.
