Since yet another diary has appeared on the recommended list about this, I'm going to jump in here.
I was hoping that someone else (maybe the original diarist from earlier today) would do this, but now I'm bugged enough I'm going to give it a try.
Here's the upshot, as I see it.
This has been pretty much debunked with a post over on Open Left, from which I've shamelessly stolen the title.
To summarize (from the Open Left post):
- WVWV doesn't just target unmarried women. they target hispanics and african americans.
- there is always a spike in voter registration around primaries AFTER the registration deadline has passed. this is the best time to register voters.
- WVWV is not a clinton-associated organization. yes john podesta is on the board, but so is mike lux and william mcnary -- both obama people.
As I said in a comment earlier this evening, I'm far from a Hillary backer. I caucused for Obama at the Texas county convention.
As far as the 'calling already registered voters' issue, we're all aware of how many new voters have been registered at the primaries. I saw how out of whack things were in Texas with more than a month between precinct and county conventions, with plenty of cases of irregularities, and that was just with caucus delegates. I can easily imagine with a national organization that they don't have up-to-date or accurate voter registrant rolls.
I will completely agree that WVWV has issues with its phone message. But it seems to me like there are plenty of other issues for us to worry about and/or work on.
My attitude: there's a lot more stupidity and a lot less conspiracy in government and politics. I think we're dealing with the former here.
