See Meet the Press and Faux News Sunday today. Both were devoted to the Mier nomination. Something extraordinary happened on both programs. The black hole that constitutes the "Pro-Life Movement" was exposed for all to see. Both Pat Buchanan and Gary Bauer pointed out the obvious; i.e. that Mier could be "pro-life" and still not agree that Roe v. Wade should be overturned.
See below:
For sometime now, many of us have argued that Republicans do not want, and will not support overturning Roe. It makes no sense to kill the goose of golden eggs fame that has raised millions for the Repugs. Moreover, criminalizing abortion would create a PR nightmare. Can you imagine, the cable news networks covering the first criminal trial for an abortion provider and/or woman who wanted to have an abortion citing reasons such as lack of income to raise the child, etc. They tried this experiment in Portugal several years ago; it was an abject failure.
The "pro-life" movement has always been a well-framed sham, supported by a fringe element; i.e. Bauer, Buchanan, et al. In truth, as John Kerry stated so well in the last election cycle: "No one is FOR abortion." We are all "pro-life". Despite what the O'Reilly, Rush, Dobson crowd would have us believe there are no trolls (liberals) living under the bridges of our metropolitan centers encouraging young women to get pregnant so that they can abort their babies. The Mier's nomination has exposed this absurd talking point for the lie that it is and we should rejoice and exploit this black hole in Republican rhetoric accordingly.
The Supreme Court, conservative to its core, will never overturn Roe. No one is "for" abortion and the Supremes understand that Americans will never again tolerate criminalizing abortion.
That is not an ambiguous stance on the issue of abortion.
