This is a little personal for me.
I'm a homosexual, and when I was younger I was (forced) to go to some Baptist churches.
Now let me give a disclaimer, I haven't ever been to a black church, but what I saw in those (probably 95%) white churches was a plethora of hate.
Hate against people like me. I'll be honest and say that I struggled with my sexuality when I was a young teen, and eventually I did turn away from the church, now I think of myself as agnostic. Oh course, I was never really conservative, so now that I look back on it, it was an easy break.
I'm sure in some churches you have very lovely sermons about social justice, and love. But my experiences in conservative Baptist churches were not like that at all.
The hate speech against homosexuals (and many other peoples) was astounding. Remember hearing Rev. Wright say "God damn america,"? Well in plenty of white churches you can hear the exact same thing.
Maybe the white churches I went to were "better" at phrasing things, most damnations were more drafted like "God will damn america if..." or "America is losing the blessings of god (hinting at national damnation)". Sometimes it can be more frightening for certain people, when you hear "God damn faqs".
I remember one particular sermon I heard in Colorado, which I had to go to because it was my Grandmother's church. The pastor was damning homosexuals, and asking if the audience wanted homosexuals as teachers, or other public servants. Many resounding "No's" were shouted, and the reason why we feel this way, the Pastor said, was because homosexuals were abominations who would burn in hell.
Wright may be news because he is the ex-pastor of a presidential candidate, but the conservatives have a much rougher history and track record when it comes to this sort of thing.
One thing I notice is that whenever a white (conservative) preacher says something hateful or controversial he is given a free pass because he has freedom of religion. But with Wright I see a black preacher which is getting a pile on, for saying things that (in certain ways) are not too different from his white counterparts.
One last thing, while I don't agree with what exactly Wright said, he did raise some (actual) great points. US involvement in foreign countries, the way that America has/does treat the poor, and the way America has/does treat minorities. Instead of debating the substance of some of his criticisms of the US (and yes, some are crazy) we are piling on, because he represents something different. But when white preachers say something (less constructive, and more hateful) we are barred from criticizing them because they are only practicing their "morals". Well their morals are empty, but we are only continuing to let them set their hateful agenda.
Universal healthcare, income redistribution, civil rights (including gay rights), and equality are our values, and we are not calling what this as it is. Their is racism behind this. Many white preachers preach things that legitimize our class system, and speak hate about "different" peoples, but we are giving them a free pass time and time again.
