Arlen Specter demands an investigation into "spygate"
Arlen Specter has finally demanded accountability to the American People. Contending that the investigation to date has been “neither objective nor adequate,” Specter has courageously called for an independent investigation of “Spygate,” the illegal wiretapping of American citizens by the Bush administration. The Republican Senator from Pennsylvania has finally transcended partisan politics and, in an all too rare showing of integrity, demanded an independent investigation of a Republican administration.
Wait a minute!! The “Spygate” to which the distinguished senator is referring is not the unconstitutional wiretapping of the American people by the Bush administration, but the taping of opposing sidelines by public enemy number one, the evil Bill Belichik of the New England patriots. The heroic senator called out NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, asserting that the NFL “owes the public a lot more candor and credibility.” Further clarifying his stance on the issue, he stated "I have a different perspective. I'm elected by 12 million people, and a lot of them are Steeler fans. Frankly I'm incensed about what happened with the Steelers, and I'm incensed about the notes being destroyed. I really am."
This is the same Arlen Specter who, as the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, repeatedly refused to stand up to the administration when Cheney had closed door energy policy meetings with the kings of pollution, refused to demand testimony from Rice, Rove, et.al. regarding the response to 911, falsification of intelligence to rationalize the Iraq occupation, firing of US attorneys who refused to selectively prosecute Democrats, etc., etc., etc.
It’s outrageous that the same Senator Specter who repeatedly shirked his responsibilities and repeatedly failed to represent his constituents is now demanding that the NFL do exactly what he has refused to demand that the Bush administration do. It’s incredible that Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Bill Belichik and other entertainers are held to a higher standard than those entrusted with our very life and well-being. I am a sports fan, and am somewhat concerned about the “integrity of the game,” but the bottom line is that these are exactly that: games. If crimes have been committed, call the police. We elect these officials to uphold the constitution, keep us safe, and use our tax money wisely for the common good. They are not elected to ensure that the New York Jets have a fair chance to beat the New England Patriots. Below is an e-mail I sent the esteemed senator today, for what it’s worth (I have serious doubts that it really matters). I suspect that Senator Specter will continue to grandstand on non-issues such as this and fail to demand accountability from the Bush administration on matters that really make a difference in our lives. This guy is truly a piece of shit.
Dear Senator Specter:
Are you out of your mind?! After years of turning your head while the Bush administration spies on your constituents, you waste your time and our money investigating the New England Patriots. Have you completely forgotten why you were elected? In case you haven't figured it out yet, you represent the people of Pennsylvania, not the New York Jets. You should be ashamed, then voted out of office. This is the most hypocritical and thoroughly disgusting move of your illustrious career.
