From Marc Ambinder:
At the NRA convention in Kentucky this afternoon, Karl Rove portrayed Barack Obama as an effete, South Side liberal who claims he's immune to criticism and and who would confiscate guns by the barrel. The gun stuff is much less important than Rove's general line of argument; Rove has a direct line to McCain advisers Steve Schmidt and Charlie Black and has been pushing the campaign to make these sorts of contrasts.
So NRA members, please answer these questions:
- Are you true patriots or do you love your guns more than your country?
- Are you loving fathers/mothers or do you love your guns more than your children?
- Are you for peace and order, or do you love your guns more than getting them in the hands of gangs and terrorists?
If you love your country more than your guns, then you won't let Karl Rove fool you into staying in Iraq and bringing the country down under a mountain of debt, a mountain of dead soldiers and innocent Iraqi women and children, a mountain of crippled veterans.
If you love your children more than your guns, then you won't let Karl Rove fool you into sending your children to a dumb war, or be hurt at school by kids carrying concealed weapons.
If you love peace and order more than your guns, then you won't let Karl Rove fool you into letting gangbangers and terrorists get hold of armor-piercing weapons that put our policemen and the military at risk.
You have a choice this November. Be the NRA we can be proud of, or be another victim of Karl Rove's con job.
Tell Karl Rove enough is enough. NOT THIS TIME! NOT THIS YEAR!
From Salon:
Speaking at a National Rifle Association convention today in Kentucky, Karl Rove laid into Obama for what he called the candidate's "dismissive" opinion of gun rights and owners. Rove referred over and over again to Obama's now infamous comment about guns and faith. Addressing the audience, Rove said, "You know in the age of Barack Obama I don't know exactly what to call you, because after all, as he said, because we're bitter and economically anxious, we 'cling to our guns and we cling to our faith.' Does that make us clingers or cling-ons?"
From David Lawrence Show:
"It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don’t have enemies. That’s not the world we live in," McCain said. "And until Sen. Obama understands that reality, the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has the strength, the judgment and determination to keep us safe."
