Geraldine Ferraro, our former Vice Presidential candidate, is considering following the path of Joe Lieberman.
From the New York Times:
Ferraro, who clashed with the Obama campaign about whether she made a racially offensive remark, said she might not either. "I think Obama was terribly sexist," she said.
Might not what?
Might not vote for Obama. And the reason is she finds him "terribly sexist." More on that in a moment.
But let's be clear here. A vote against Obama is a vote for John McCain, any way you slice it. Joe Lieberman is voting for John McCain, and now his failed-Vice-Presidential-candidate colleague Geraldine Ferraro is considering doing the same thing.
But with Joe Lieberman, it is a policy-based decision. He actually agrees with John McCain and George Bush, and thus his actions are less of an abandonment of principles than an embrace of them. With Geraldine, it is a decision most obviously based on spite. For on policy, Hillary Clinton (the candidate Ferraro supports) and Barack Obama differ almost not at all. Therefore, there can be no policy basis for this potential decision to support John McCain.
Therefore, if she indeed goes through it, she will be voting to abandon all of her principles and her life's work simply because she is a sore loser and considers petulance a virtue.
Finally, I would like Geraldine Ferraro to define what exactly Obama himself has done that she finds to be terribly sexist. Yes, some of his more fervent supporters have been sexist towards Hillary. Yes, some of the media has been sexist in their coverage of Hilliary. Yes, sexism, like racism, is a problem our country will continue to overcome in the coming years.
But I have seen no evidence of sexism on the part of Barack Obama himself, or even his campaign staff. This is a serious charge by Ms. Ferraro, and she needs to back it up immediately with details lest I call her a liar.
