Since the May 31 meeting of the DNC Rules Committee is approaching, I thought maybe it would be interesting to pick the brains of everyone here and see what you think is an appropriate solution for the problem of Michigan and Florida.
I'll get the conversation started over the jump...
First I'll give my proposed solution, then my reasoning:
Florida: Seat pledged delegates in full, but give Edwards' pledged delegates to Obama, with John Edwards' endorsement. Superdelegates from Florida are stripped of their votes.
Michigan: Seat delegation in full, giving all "uncommitted delegates to Obama. Again, strip superdelegates from Michigan of their vote.
My reasoning is this: whatever punishment should fall on those two states ought to fall on the politicians who created this mess in the first place, and punishing the voters themselves in those states, however you may feel on the merits of it, is counterproductive to our goal of winning the White House in November. However, the superdelegates from those states and other states must be made to understand that the actions of MI & FL were unacceptable, and they will be punished by losing their vote at the convention as punishment. The people are spared, the supers are punished, and the delgates are apportioned in a way that does not affect the outcome of the race unfairly.
Let me know how you feel about this idea, especially if you are from Michigan or Florida, and in the comments tell me how YOU would handle this if you were the DNC Rules Committee, with the goals of winning the White House and enforcing respect for the DNC in mind.
