For as many times as I've watched Scott McClellan spew White house lies, spin and propaganda, and trembling with contempt at his swift dismissals of the press corps on any subject they rarely challenged him on, I think I'm beginning to believe that he might actually have an ounce of integrity after all.
Now before you get all "he's just out to sell books" on me, please check out this video over at Yahoo and then check out his interview this morning over at the Today Show.
I just saw this over at Jabberwonk. Here's a direct link to the video.
Think Tanks and the Selling of Iraq War
Today Show Interview
As everyone here knows Scotty delivered the goods and fed the White House talking points to the press and they ate it up and regurgitated it as news.
But when the Plame leak hit and the media FINALLY asked some real questions about Rove and Libby, Scotty seemed to be out of his element more so than other times he had to stonewall and re-direct. I think, as he says in the today Show interview, that this was a turning point for him. And to me, personally, I felt for the first time I was watching a sincere human being answering Meredith Vieira's pointed questions about "why now?" and "why didn't you speak out then?"
Would any of us stand up to our bosses on pure moral skepticism and go up against the will of the company environment on our own? I don't know.
Can McClellan the man be repentant for selfless reasons? And not to get all theological but The term repentance in the Hebrew Bible states, " It is within the power of every man to redeem himself from sin by resolutely breaking away from it."
Could McClellan have felt so betrayed by these people in the White House in their attempt to cover up for the criminality of Cheney, Rove and Libby, and that they pulled the rug out from under him on the Plame Leak, that this was truly the "last straw" and he decided to go (temporarily quietly) into that good night.
