Recently, I was saddened to hear that Maya Angelou stars in a commercial for Hillary currently broadcasting in North Carolina, which bummed me out nearly as much as the "This One's For Ann" ad the Clinton campaign aired in Texas.
While I love Obama's recent "Minute" ad (NC version here), billed as his closing argument to the people of Indiana and North Carolina, I think there are a few more ads he could use to "seal the deal" with voters on May 6. Follow me after the jump, I'll list my picks and we can brainstorm together.
- A series of "unlikely alliance" commercials (like those cute climate change commercials with Al Sharpton and Pat Robertson on the beach) featuring people of "different" backgrounds, generations or political persuasions declaring their common support of Obama. Examples: Obama endorser Alice Walker alongside Jean Weiss and Cheryl Crow; or a clip featuring Caroline Kennedy and Susan Eisenhower together (maybe this would be best for the general election?)...or John Edwards and Ron Paul, if they'd just endorse him!
- Testimonials of people who organized with Obama on the South Side of Chicago, interwoven with soundbytes from Obama's speeches and pictures of him then and now
- Testimonials of members of Congress who worked with Obama on key legislation
- Commentary on Obama's commitment to TRANSPARENCY IN LEGISLATION (Google for government, and Obama's comments the other day in St. Joseph County, IN about remodeling the White House website to increase citizen participation, with information about legislation)...linking this commitment to transparency with his commitment to a democratic campaign. This is a very positive aspect of his campaign that gets overlooked by most people in the mainstream media.
- More, anything, from Obama's grandmother (I liked the "Maya" ad he aired in Pennsylvania), though I understand she's not in good health
- Clips from Bill Richardson's and Joe Andrew's endorsements of Obama, because they're exciting.
- People who've worked with AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps talking about how important these programs are, interspersed with Obama's comments about AmeriCorps and Americans' willingness to serve on Meet the Press today.
- An Obama ad on strengthening the working class, with a speech from Valparaiso linking the Clinton administration era sale of the company to the Bush-era exportation of Magnequench jobs to China.
- The "Hoosiers Switch to Obama" ad listed on YouTube...this ad just rocks.
- Anything set to Springsteen music, or maybe a new duet featuring Springsteen and John Legend...?
Feel free to use the comments section to post your own ideas or reflect on those above...and if you think this thread is worthwhile, rec it up so the Obama campaign people might notice it! If not now, maybe they could benefit from them during the general election.
