I may be a bit biased, but I think Tippecanoe County has it all over the rest of the state in terms of elections. We went to the touch-screen system as of 2002, way before the mandate was passed.
We have also instituted area vote centers instead of precincts. That means we have 20 vote centers rather than 200+ precincts to staff, control, service and fix machines at.
I was out at one of the Vote Centers here in Tippecanoe County today (The Outpost Catering on old 231). There was a steady stream from 9-10 AM - 9 machines running, people waiting about 5-10 mins total. I'd say it was harder getting out of the parking lot than it was to vote today. Most people were really happy about the regional sites, except one guy from Romney.
We also started early voting weeks prior to May 6th. The first three sites were at Purdue starting April 17th, before dead week for students. While they hadn't agreed to accept the Purdue Student ID as proof until LAST FRIDAY (*&^% Republican County Clerk), they will be usable in the fall. We had 9 days of voting Sat- Sun May 4th 10AM-7 PM at two area Payless stores, West Lafayette City Hall and a large mega-church on the east side.
There were 11,000 ballots cast BEFORE 6 AM today in a county that usually has only 13,000 for a primary. They bumped up their projections to 42,000 or nearly 3 times the normal number for the primary!!! So, I am sure SOME sites are probably swamped.
I am heading back out soon to take a tour of the votes sites to see for myself.
