Today, the Government of Canada recognized a grave and serious injustice towards her aborginal peoples.
Marguerite Wabano, 104, a First Nations woman from Moosonee, Ontario, and a survivor of Canada's racist residential school policy was seated on the floor of the House of Commons as the Prime Minister of Canada apologized on behalf of all Canadians.
In 1870, the Government of Canada adopted a policy which created and maintained hundreds of 'residential schools' which removed First Nations children from their home communities and attempted to assimilate them into English and French speaking culture. For nearly a century, children aged 7 to 16 were forced into residential schools and so began the decimation of native culture and language in Canada.
The policy was dropped in the 1960's. Today, it is recognized across Canada, that the residential school experience resulted in the sexual and physical abuse of tens of thousands of aboriginal children.
