We can't have it all. The benefits which accrue to Obama by being against the Iraq War are somewhat negated by the support he loses among suburban mom's votes.
This will not change in this cycle and in fact it won't change until the Iraq war is long behind us.
They have voted solidly for the GOP since 9/11 on war issues. I don't agree with their inclinations but i long ago gave up trying to argue with them. I do not think we should waste our efforts and money on trying to change this demographic. They will not change.
Here is the rationale behind the Wall Street Journal poll published today, showing Obama running behind McCain among suburban moms:
These relatively young women with children between the ages of 3 and 12, are a one issue voting block. I have argued with two of my daughters in law and one of my own daughters, all three in this demo. I have explained they may lose the right to choose. They will continue to watch their homes drop in value, health care, stem cell research etc etc etc..
They don't care. They are concerned about their children living into adulthood. They throw back at me every time we discuss this that" while the Iraq War has been going on there have been no terrorists attacks on the U.S. mainland." They stubbornly, albiet sincerely, feel that as long as terrorists are busy in Iraq they don't have enough resources to attack their children here.
My reason for publishing this Diary is this may sound ridiculous to me and most people, it doesn't matter. We should not waste time on this group.
We didn't move them in 2002, 2004,2006 and we won't move them in 2008
We will win handily without them.
PS: I am not a troll
UPDATE
Too many hysterical comments.
The point I was making it that "soccer moms" are not a huge demographic and we will certainly win without them, so why waste time trying to move an unmoveable demo?
No need to overreact. Better to try and understand why a young Mom might rationally interpet the fact that we have no attacks here as connected to the Iraq war thousand of miles away.
Grow up.This is the New Politics.
