I went door knocking for Obama and other people in the DFL party yesterday. It was an absolutely beautiful day here yesterday in Minneapolis, Minnesota and we cherish those days here. So it was a great day to go door knocking but most people weren't home. I can't blame them. We have to soak up the sunshine when we can.
My husband, Jim, and I were wearing our Obama t-shirts. People honked and shouted out the window "Woo Hoo Obama" as we walked by. I shouted back with a huge smile. Jim just kept studying the house numbers to see where we go next. Another lady rolled down her car window and asked for an Obama bumber sticker. We didn't have one but I am glad she asked. I thought about running out into the middle of the street to get her name and address to mail her a bumper sticker but she was driving off before my feet were moving. I missed an opportunity. I had to write this diary because now there is a person without an Obama bumber sticker on their car.
I want to be out there every single day between now and the election creating excitement for Obama. Almost 40,000 people showed up in Minnesota to see Obama recently. I was the 6th person in line. I gotta tell you I enjoyed my day hanging out with the Obama supporters so much. The 4 college guys next to me wore suits with Obama t-shirts. They sat and played cards while the media interviewed them. The girls on the other side were interviewed many times because they were the first people sitting out there waiting. They represented the Obama supporters well. The excitement was real and wonderful. All fired up. Ready to go.
I do not want to let the high-energy feeling go. What am I doing every single day to help ensure this wave of excitement and public engagement ensures Obama wins November?
The bumber sticker is on the car. Check.
I wear my Obama shirts a lot. I get stopped by people to talk about Obama. The people stopping me have all been positive about Obama. I am sure this always won't be the case but I am enjoying it so far. Wearing Obama t-shirts. Check.
I went door knocking and talked my husband into going. Two check marks for me there. My husband is a hard-core liberal and a huge Obama fan but getting him to go door knocking was not easy. He is a little shy and was sure the doors would be slammed in our faces. He was wrong. They weren't even home to slam the doors.
I went to the Obama rally and invited others to go. Check.
I talk to friends and family about Obama. Check. I have tolerated my cousin's stupid question "I heard Obama doesn't say the pledge of allegiance. Is this true?" I wanted to scream back " Would you even be asking this question if he were white?" I didn't scream. I assured her he said the the Pledge of Allegiance. I emailed her information backing me up. My cousin is a Democrat! If she is asking these kinds of ridiculous questions, I realize we have a lot of work to do to get the accurate information out.
I am going to get more Obama t-shirts and wear them every single day between now and the election. I want the undecided voters out there to see the overwhelming support out there for Obama.
What else can I do to help create the Obama support? No offense, but writing a diary is just preaching to the choir. I need to be out there with the people that don't yet understand why we need Obama in the White House. What can we all do to keep the excitement and high energy of the rallies going?
