John McCain has, once again, demonstrated his capacity for pure, unvarnished stupidity. Commenting on the recent SCOTUS decision he declared,
"The United States Supreme Court yesterday rendered a decision which I think is one of the worst decisions in the history of this country."
The decision by the Court re- affirmed not only a fundamental constitutional right, but a right that that has been in existence for 793 years today, June 15th – the right of Habeas Corpus. A birthday which I proudly share. I am, however, a mite younger.
Happy Birthday Habeas.
More over the flip.
I wonder if the Senator considered some of the other SCOTUS decisions before proclaiming their latest decision to be the worst in the history of the court? Did he consider decisions such as Korematsu v. United States, 1944, which forced 10’s of thousands of citizens of Japanese ancestry into interment camps?
How about Plessy v. Ferguson, 1896, which established the Separate but Equal doctrine and relegated African/Americans to second class citizenship or perhaps, Dred Scott v. Sanford, 1857, which upheld slavery and established slaves as property and not citizens of any state.
Then there is the most oxymoronic decision handed down in 1883, in which the court ruled that Native Americans were aliens. And, of course, the unbeatable bad decision of all time – Gore v. Bush, 2000 where the court decided they were more suited to the task of selecting a president than were the unwashed masses.
However, for entirely different reasons, I agree it was a bad decision because it was 5 to 4 – in a sane world (one not infested with neo-cons) it would be 9 to 0.
I can only assume one of two things about McCain’s statement (1) he doesn’t give a crap about the rule of law or the Constitution or (2) he just shoots his mouth off before giving thought to what he’s saying. Of course both 1 and 2 is extremely likely to be the case. Traits he shares with the sociopath contaminating the WH.
