Yesterday at Civic Center plaza the pro and anti gay marriage forces gathered as the first couple got married legally in City Hall (again.) As most of you know from other diaries they were two women in their 80s who have spend the last 50 years together loving each other and fighting for gay rights. Outside the anti crowd chanted about immorality, Satan's spawn going to hell and the octogenarian women inside being a threat to society...the pro forces included the SF Gay Men's chorus and SF Gay band as well as many well wishers.
By all accounts the pro forces were marvelous singing and playing to drown out the nay sayers. When the musicians took breaks the crowd chanted Love, Love, Love...over and over. All of this made me yet again proud to be a San Franciscan but perhaps my favorite sentiment of the day came from the scoop guys from Ben and Jerry's who were on site giving away free ice cream. But here was the catch, they would only give free ice cream to the pro gay marriage folks, categorically crying, "No Free Ice Cream For Haters!" I cannot think of a more perfect sentiment.
