Well, I thought it was curious we didn't hear a number for so long this month. Now we know why.
Mark Halperin reports that Obama raised "only" $22 million in May, a measley half-million more than McCain for the month.
I admit I'm spoiled. Obama has averaged $40 million per month, and I've gotten used to Obama raising at least $30 million in a "bad" month. My expectations are up there. But they were built on reality, not fantasy.
But what's important is that Obama's strategy revolves around making McCain shit bricks in places like Alaska, Georgia, and Indiana, while still spending McCain into oblivion in places like Ohio and Pennsylvania.
And a half-million advantage per month doesn't get remotely close to getting that done.
I hope they're picking up the pace big-time in June. I suspect they are. But I really want to see a $50 million month again to make up for May and ensure the plan works.
And in case you're wondering, yes, I'm guilty of contributing to the May "shortfall." I just checked my records and saw that I've given every month this year...except May. I even gave "twice" in June if you count not just the contribution I made in early June but also my more recent purchase of a yard sign and a t-shirt.
And no, this is not a fundraising request to anyone. My employment comes with a legal prohibition against solicitation of political contributions, so don't take this diary as a call to do anything. I'm just commenting on the state of things.
