The Conyer's House Resolution for Universal Health just got a nice boost today. The nonpartisan U.S. Conference of Mayors (open to all mayors with municipalities of 30,000 or greater)just resolved UNANIMOUSLY to back the H.R. 676 bill.
What does this mean? One could argue both sides...
On the one hand, little can be done till after November. It presently has zero chance of passing the Senate. It has an even worse chance of getting signed into law by President Bush, if by some miracle it passed both chambers.
On the other, this backing is more cover for any republicans who are looking for guidance from their districts about how they should vote for such a bill.
Remember, with an overwhelmingly Democratic House of Representatives, much can be done to move this kind of legislation. Obama said once that he was open to a single-payer system, but that he didn't think it was immediately feasible, politically. Hence his re-jiggering of universal health care options. He KNOWS that the best solution, though, is a single payer solution (I've looked for links to back this assertion up, though presently my source is escaping me... Help!)
At any rate, "MEDICARE FOR ALL" just got a nice boost.
Please recommend this diary if you'd like to remind the political world that reads this weblog that a Universal Health Care Bill is waiting in the wings to save American businesses, American communities, and American lives.
