Today, Hillary finally loses the battle for delegates and, if the nomination follows the delegate count, she will have lost the delegate count.
We're all seeing a lot of anguish from Hillary supporters who are so disappointed that the next president won't be her that they're threatening to vote for McCain out of pure spite.
How did the hopes of so many feminists wind up in Hillary's basket, and can we take this opportunity to diversify a bit?
There are women politicians out there other than Hillary. In fact, until the Democratic party installed her as Senator, she wasn't really a politician at all. My understanding has been that the seat she now occupies would likely have gone to Nita Lowey, a homegrown female New York politician, had it not been handed to her (Lowey stepped aside). (Thanks to Ralphdog below for supplying her name and Bluemass for supplying the spelling.)
Believe me, I sympathize with my feminist sisters who are crushed at Hillary's defeat in her struggle for the nomination. Unforunately, she has made a "Dream Ticket" impossible by her conduct -- particularly her alleging on various occasions that the Republican nominee was better-qualified to serve than her own Democratic opponent. But I refuse to believe that our bench is so shallow that this means we cannot have a female VP candidate THIS cycle.
So let's brainstorm. What Democratic woman, other than Hillary Rodham Clinton, can help bring our party together by running alongside Barack Obama and bringing our dream of a female president a palpable step closer to becoming a reality?
