As a just-graduated BA in polisci, I've been spending the days since commencement.....that's right, on my parents' couch surfing for jobs. Things are rolling along right now, though. Phone interviews have happened or are imminent with both SEIU organizers and Grassroots Campaigns, Inc. (GCI) staffers. So this is an open call for advice, ideally from those who have worked for one or even both of these organizations.
I've been assured by people I trust for months now that if I want to work in Labor, then I want to work for Andy Stern. After reading his book, I'm inclined to agree, despite the reservations some in this community have expressed about SEIU recruitment tactics. My online research into GCI has really left me cold, and unless something dramatic gets said here to change my mind I'm almost certain that I will not go down that road. What say you, oh hard-bitten progressives?
For parameters sake: I'm not at all sure that I want a career with either of these groups. I'm not at all sure what I want my career to look like. My best guess is that whatever job I take now will be something on the order of 1-2 years, and will be followed by a grad degree in Public Policy or Comm. Or if Obama loses I'll move somewhere...maybe Portugal....down south-america way...
As an addendum (or perhaps, an irreladendum):
It's quite apparent from my diary history that I have primarily extracted value from DKos rather than add some of my own to it. I have always been a more active commenter than diarist. I very much hope that as the Dem nomination fight spins itself into nothing a modicum of civility will return to these pages. More than anything, I'm eager to have a job so that the hours I'm spending couch-bound can involve contribution rather than extraction. This is my stupid college way of saying "Thanks" to everyone reading/commenting here, and to those who have offered a word of advice in the past.
