Are you a Red Sox fan or a Yankees fan? You have to be one or the other. No compromise. Red Sox fans are tough, working class hard working folk from New England. Yankee fans are Metropolitan, multi-cultural urbanites from the City. Both teams are hugely popular across the country, and any person who follows baseball understands that there is no compromise; if you love one, you hate the other.
So why is everyone surprised that Hillary supporters and fans of Obama are battling like cattle ranchers and sheepherders? The simple truth is that Americans love a winner. . . unless you are for the other team, and then you hate a winner.
Of course there is a lot at stake for the candidates: power, prestige, and the eventual tens of millions of dollars to the winner. Plus, you get to be the leader of the (for the moment) most powerful nation on Earth. So if the game is almost over, are you going to lie, slander, cheat and do whatever it takes to win? Ask Roger Clemons, Barry Bonds, or Bill Belichick. (For those who are not aware, two of them did steroids and the other one stole signals from the other team. Oh yeah, they all have had run-ins with Arlen Spectre, so you might have heard of them.)
So why has it been so hard for Hillary to drop out? Because she is an American. Because her loyalty to the game, and winning the game, far outweighs everything else. She has been consumed by the game. 17,000,000 + Americans are more loyal to the game, then to the fact that their very lives depend on the outcome of this election. This isn't baseball, or the Super Bowl, or the BCS, or competitive Curling. This is the future of our nation.
So for the moment, let us forgive those who are not seeing beyond the game. Let us forgive the Yankee Haters, and those who despise the Sox, and the Patriots conspiracists, and the steroids fanaticists, and everyone else who is still in their seats at the stadium, still in disbelief that their team lost. It's part of who we are. Caught in the game, living and dying with every play, every error, every fumble and every score.
And then let that moment be done, and lets get the fuck to work, because there is still a war on, gas is still $4.00 a gallon, and Health Care premiums still take 10-30% of our annual income. And if McCain wins, it only gets worse. Get involved in every election you can. Our moment is now. I'm just sayin'.
